Defending champions Argentina will face Colombia in the Copa America 2024 final on Monday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The match is set to kick off at 6:00 AM Bangladesh Standard Time.
This is only the second time in 48 editions that Copa America has been held outside South America, with the USA hosting the tournament this year.
Both Argentina and Uruguay are the most successful teams in Copa America history, each boasting 15 titles. Argentina notably secured 12 of these titles during the South American Championship era (1916-1967). The Argentine team clinched the Copa title in 2021 by defeating Brazil 1-0, and after their 2022 FIFA World Cup victory, a win in 2024 would mark three consecutive major international titles for Lionel Messi and his teammates.
Colombia, meanwhile, has won the Copa America only once, in 2001. Under the guidance of Argentine coach Nestor Lorenzo, Colombia is currently on a 28-match unbeaten streak. They reached the final after defeating Paraguay and Costa Rica in the group stage, and then achieving a 5-0 victory against Panama in the quarter-finals, followed by a win over Uruguay in the semi-finals.
Argentina’s team, coached by Lionel Scaloni, enters the final unbeaten, having advanced with a 2-0 win against Canada in the semi-finals, thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Messi. They also progressed from the quarter-finals after defeating Ecuador in a penalty shootout, having won all their group matches without conceding.
Messi will be playing in his record seventh major final, the most in international football history, if he takes the field against Colombia.
In the Golden Boot race for Copa America 2024, Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez leads with four goals, while his teammate has two, along with Colombia’s Jhon Cordoba and Luis Diaz.
Lionel Messi leads Argentina into the 2024 Copa America final on Sunday, where they take on James Rodriguez’s Colombia. Both the teams have performed well in the tournament in this match to be held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Argentina finished the group stage with a 3-0 record and a +5 goal difference. Colombia, on the other hand, have a 2-0-1 record in their three group matches. Argentina beat Canada 2–0 in the semi-finals, while Colombia beat Uruguay 1–0, despite playing the entire second half with 10 men.
Notably, while previous knockout matches this tournament proceeded to penalties if tied after 90 minutes, the final will include extra time if necessary.
